EVALUATION TEMPLATE for Internet Resources (WK 11 - One Resource)

Name : Tan Shumin Charissa

Class : P07

Title of Internet Resource: Fashion History

URL : http://www.fashion-era.com/

Are the aims of the website clearly stated?

Yes, the aims of the website are clearly stated. They were focusing on the history of fashion and the latest fashion trends.

What is the coverage of the site? Is it comprehensive? What subject areas and materials are covered? Are there any pointers to further information that enhance the coverage of the site? Are the links to other sites useful?

At Fashion-Era.com they had analyzed two centuries of women's costume history and fashion history silhouettes in detail. Regency, Romantic, Victorian, Edwardian, Flapper,1940's Utility Rationing, Dior's New Look, 1960's Mini dress, 1970's Disco, 1980's New Romantics, Power Dressing, Haute Couture, Royal Robes, Fashion Semiotics, and Body Adornment, each retro fashion era, and future fashion trends were all defined
They had also outlined the history of Jewellery, Perfumes, Cosmetics, Corsetry and Underwear manipulation of the body silhouette. They had also cover on the effects of past and present technology, changes in work, leisure, media and home life that would affect lifestyle trends, attitudes, fashion trends and shopping trends.
I would say that this website has an extensive and full coverage on the past and present fashion trends. There were no other links on the website except for a google search engine which was useful in searching the whole website.

Is this an authoritative source? Are there any reviews about this site or has it been included in any gateways or virtual libraries?

No. This is not an authoritative source. There were no reviews about this site nor has it been included in any virtual libraries. It stands on its own, neither does it have a propaganda for displaying its information. Its purpose was just to inform its readers and give more information relating to fashion

Are the facts accurate? Does it use research as a basis? Is there political, ideological, or biasness in the source? Is it a factual site or one that contains an opinion? Are the references stated clearly? Is it free from grammatical, spelling and typographical errors?

Yes, the facts are accurate. They had cited many resources in their bibliography. It is indeed a website that has used research as its basis. There are no political, ideological or biasness connotations in this source. They had just covered what they had researched on and shared it with others. The references were all stated very clearly.

In fact, there was almost none, or very little grammatical, spelling and typographical errors that I could detect.

Is the information up-to-date? Is it well-maintained?

Yes the information was up-to-date. The website was relatively well-maintained. However, it’s layout could be improved on to make it more user-friendly as it had looked a little disorganized.

Is the site easily accessible? Does it require registration and log-ins? Are all the information accessible for FREE?

The website was easily accessible. It did not require any registration or log-in. The information accessible was for personal use and not commercial purposes. It did not cost anything to read their information, however, a small donation was gently asked for at the bottom of the page to help the administrator keep her website running. However, it was voluntary and not compulsory.

Presentation and Arrangement
Is the information well presented and arranged? Is the information clearly, consistently and logically presented and arranged? Are there any features such as site map, an index or a search facility? How effective are the search features in helping users to find information?

The information was presented and displayed logically and consistently. It was in chronological order. There were different categories that I could click on in chronological order which helped me to navigate around pretty smoothly. However, it was arranged too closely together and looked a tad disorganized.

There were no site map, however, there was a search facility and navigation links to link me from different pages to different eras of fashion.

The search feature which was a Google Search engine was relatively efficient in helping me search for what I wanted. All I had to do was type in my keyword and anything related to my keyword had appeared.

Is it easy to use and navigate around? Are there user support facilities?

Yes, it was still relatively easy to use and navigate around. However, it could get a tad confusing as there were so many pages to view from. Linking from different page to different page was a tedious as there were to many things to keep track on. There were navigation bars at the top of the webpage for each page; hence it did help me a lot.

What is your overall impression of the quality of the websites?

My overall impression of the website was, even though it lacked the sophistication of a professional website. However, it was relatively neat and had ample information regarding to fashion. It was detailed, logical, and consistent in displaying its information and I would say that the information is very extensive.

Therefore, my impression of this website’s quality is a fine impression of it.
